A FAILED UNITY

Well ... this one is a surprise.

The firm Canonical has announced its ending it's work on the Unity project. Unity was basically a GUI, Graphical User Interface, for Ubuntu what is an Operating System which is built on Linux ... which is kinda ... a version, free one, of Unix.

Confused?

Yeah well that's probably why it failed.

And did I say I was surprised?

Yeah, I was only surprised by the fact this was reported on in the BBC News app!

I had a little try of Unity and Ubuntu on a laptop and I was not impressed. It was also overheating my laptop which was shutting itself down.

I ... published an article or piece somewhere criticising Unity and Ubuntu and basically got rid my some idiot fanboys that I was a newbie and did not know what I was talking about.

Funny then that we fast a forward a few years and not only is there this announcement that its ending, in part, but that there is also a mention of difficulties with laptops.

Funny, no one who criticised me mentioned that there was a long running issue getting it to work on laptops.

I was criticised for trying to run it on an AMD Radeon as apparently they didn't work so well as they did not have an open system when it cage to drivers. I stated that this only made things even worse! I pointed out that there are not one but TWO companies producing graphics cards and that you would think that was something with warning people about?!

No ... all I heard and read was how fantastic the OS was, easy to install and worked great. Umm ... no.

What my critics failed to know, as is often the case with fanboys in anything that are obviously brain dead, is that I have a BSc Single Honours Degree in Applied Computing.

They also failed to realise I'm somewhat older than your average teenager by more years than I care to admit.

But what this does mean is I had a Binatone Pong gaming system, Atari 2600, Commodore VIC-20, Commodore Amiga and my first PC was a Pentium 2.

I also built one of the first SLI rigs with an Athlon64 and two Before 6800GT's. Or was it 8800? I forget. It was around a month or so before CustomPC did an article on it and his difficult it was. 

Umm ... no it wasn't. Well ... except for the fact it didn't occur to me that I had to install the GPU driver twice!!

No, nor did they know that I set up my PC to dual boot with various operating systems which included Linux RedHat 4.5, I think it was, back around 1998. Now that was a pain in the arse. Considering attending lectures and assignments to complete it took me two days to get it working. One lecturer I was friendly with said I would not get it working. The look on his face when I told him that I had got Windows and RedHat dual booting but that it did take two days.

One again, like the damned SLI setup it never occurred to me they might use different file formats and to achieve this you had to use specific partitions a certain way and think about the boot sector.

Yeah but if you've played around with something for five minutes you get the right to accuse everyone else of being thick newbies if you don't praise the thing you love.

Hey?! At least in this case it's something that is free they have not paid through the nose for.

The reason I tried it again is like I said with RedHat all those years ago, Linux needs to go a long way before it will become relevant. That was because back then they said it would overtake Windows eventually. "Not anytime soon out won't" I said to this remark.

The funny thing is I see people saying that when I run down the operating system.

On the one hand they said it was better than Windows and would overtake it in its market share.

But they also said it was an operating system for people who liked to 'tinker'. Errr no.

Those two things don't go together and of you just want to get things done you can't have something you need to keep buggering about with.

It also needs to be bloody intuitive for it to ever come close to the number of installs Windows has.

The funny thing is something else that also runs on a Unix, is it actually Linux as I forget, core gets launched and does overtake Windows to boot ...

Android.

Boy I would have hated being Mark Shuttlecock or worse still, anyone who had been working on Linux for like well over ten years. To watch Android just get launched and then rocket upwards.

Funny thing is I'm not a fan of Android either and it seems to have developed faults and bad habits as it is supposed to get better.

I really wouldn't want an Android desktop computer! Nor, even, a laptop.

Maybe one day someone might actually being out a version of Linux where I know I could give up Windows entirely?

I just hope that wait is not as long as my last one from RedHat 4.5 to Ubuntu 14.6, I think it was, Pangolin ... that one?

Maybe if Canonical had just concentrated on desktops and laptops we might have already gotten one?

Oddly I never liked the look of many of the other Linux distros, Mint probably being about the best outside of Unity.

I might build a PC to run Linux on later this year and I'll look into the GUI's then to see what's on offer.

I guess I can stop searching for that Ubuntu Phone now?

PROCECT ZERO THE AMD A10-7850K KAVERI

Well here it is, the one that at least a few people would have been waiting for, I know I have.

I find this chip truly fascinating and the one I kind of talked about at university back in 1998. Hmm yeah well it is minus a couple of CPU cores but, hey. This is a start and I believe that not only is this a capable and innovative little slither of silicone that prompted me to finally build the system I was after but will lead to far greater things with the next two successors. Waited for this for so very long now.

If I could build a PC capable of being able to run Crysis 3 as near as damn it then this would be ace because games would come out that were better coded, read efficient, and I immediately think Bethesda and Fallout 4 and Elder Scrolls 6, perhaps even Dishonoured 2?

That leads me onto the fact that outside of Bethesda and the Farcry series, have the first one here somewhere, I am totally unfamiliar with the games scene.

Interested in Metro. Crysis is OK but hearing it gets worse with each version and the graphics get better. Also hearing not good things about the company. But then because of the crap job they did of Crysis 3 I am not that surprised, so absolute NO-NOS where performed on that one that the person that suggested it should never be allowed to work in the gaming industry ever again.

As I paid £5.00 for it and £3.00 for the second installment in game, yes eight quid for both, I will not complain too much but you just do not include the ability to save your game.

What WAS that idiot thinking?

Anyway this is the bit I always enjoy the most is taking out the CPU I chose, sorry APU, and just holding it for a moment while studying it. Just thinking how much that one and a half inch square can actually do! The possibilities are also pretty grand too even on the desktop side and any software engineer worth his salt would simply want to code for all the cores capable of compute of which there are twelve. TWELVE!

When I think of that in a chip this size and price I truly wonder at others at their bemoaning and claims of championing and wonder of they truly get it or just looking at their boxes with rose tinted spectacles of love, lol.

As for the bottlenecking .. yes just don't, lol. I know that those stating these things really did not know the craft they laid claim to. JayzTwoCents, or whatever he calls himself on YouTube, already showed that this was utter bull. Mind you Linux Users might have an issue. However if the Steam OS comes out this should n longer be a problem. Of course if the rumours about Steam being done for nVidia re true this will not be good but rest assured this would not reflect well on Valve either, had to happen sometime and this might be it?

What I can tell you is the fangirls have already started spitting venom at each other from the pink armchairs in their bedrooms!

OK so what we know is that like the XBox One the PS4 has..

8 Jaguar Cores
8000 or 9000 Radeon, either GCN 2.0 or 3.0 as from cryptic rumours
Sony PS4 is Cheaper
No limit to used games (HATS OFF!!)

The CPUs will be custom designed further beyond the fact it is 8 Jaguar cores and that bit we still no nothing about. Both Microsoft and Sony have had their own design input.

The swings and rouandaboouts bit now comes with the following...

Despite them being very similar the XBox One does have fewer GPU shader cores than the Sony PS4 and on paper looks to be slightly slower.

But there are two things to consider here

1) Microsoft's long term experience with x86 CPU Hardware and GPUs

2) Also when it comes to both designing hardware and software for these chips. Unless they do a Windows HATE on us, oooh I AM sorry I mean Windows 8.

I am somehwat confused over waffle over both the pre-owned game fiasco now as there was also mention of monthly fees?!

Now it surely is high time that these companies stop trying to fool and rip off people, just charge what you need to and that is it, fangirls will just have to stop whining.

It costs what it costs so get over it.

But do NOT start fecking around with the OS's again to bind people over to your wants and do NOT charge monthly fees that is so dead in the water you do not wanna know.

Yes OK I wish I had not tried the Linux version that I did now but you are so narrow sighted, hell bent on control and greedy for power that if you are not careful you will find yourselves with none of those.

I am rather surprised that in all these years Linux (like Ubuntu) did not rise up to be a real threat to you but while you are chuckling at that you failed to realise you are being broadsided from the starboard bow Cap'n, could no resists that.

Now that you are turning to see that you have released that there are two OS's shooting at you in the name of Android (GROAN GOOGLE AGAIN) only to be hit in the backside Mozilla!!

So reports of Android on the PC, a Mozilla OS on the PC, Linux on phones and two new games consoles, two new generations of graphics cards and a die shrink on the AMD CPUs?!

RIGS TO GAME AND WORK

Well. What do I day about this subject?

Had this idea banding around in my nogging for awhile now. Ever since November 2012 I kept thinking I was only a few weeks away from starting it. I ended up not getting into position to make the furry small purchase. It has evolved a few times in the lengthy period where every two weeks I thought I would make that purchase. That is eight times or 8 fortnights and I an still waiting.

In that time it has changed a few times and now a second rig has been added and is the only sensible solution to my plans. After well it is an age old adage that says work and play should not mix.

Of course one of these is LINUX and one Windows 7, note how I specifically said seven?

Now presently I am using Ubuntu with Unity and still trying to understand certain aspects and why certain things are actually slower than windows, to my absolute horror and confusion. Whether this is actually down to Unity I do not know yet, cue Peter who I would like to here more about on here if what he knows about LINUX and why he does not like Unity. I want to ask as that is the reaction I have had from quite a few and one guy said it took longer to get striping to things and I thought I had solved this.

I like the look if Unity but I have noticed done odd things about it. When first installed the launcher icons were huge bit scrolled very easy and quickly. But you could not alter the size and there was no transparency.

Cue a big battle with AMD drivers and now transparency is in, size is reduced and oddly the scrolling is now very crap and this annoying compacting of icons at the button which hinders use. In other words everything is slowed right down to be useless. Added to this the unique and very much liked for desktops available when first installed also have vanished. Very weird.

I download and overall My Unity but that does not help so I end up downloading Docky... Unlocking the icons that go off screen and add them to the new dock but the dock springs up when I want to scroll a window?!

Annoying.

Also annoying is opening up the Pictures folder which takes forever to show all the thumbnails. Again weird.

My laptop may not be the latest or greatest but should be far more than enough for LINUX as it is for Windows 7.

So if Rig gets built for LINUX it may bit be having the same LINUX OS I currently use. In this time I seem to have amassed a fair few others and need to set one up in the next few days.

This one is Porteus and operated entirely and happily from a USB drive. I have also acquired more speed from this overall of Windows 7 too as I downloaded an ISO and deleted the recovery partition with Hewlett Packard's shit install of Windows 7 and all its bloatware.

Would you believe that, and I an still coming to terms with this myself, that Elder Scrolls V Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas run noticeably faster than before?! Weirdly I also had installed previously that Razor Game Booster before this overall that was supposed to speed up games by turning things off. Well if it did speed it up it was barely noticeable and better advice would be given to write down your Windows key, in case the sticker gets rubbed it, download an official bare Windows 7 ISO and then delete the recovery partition and do a here install.

Word of warning I always say to people, as well as making it myself yet again recently and had my bacon saved by Ubuntu, is get your wireless adaptor driver and make sure it is the right one. Microsoft have not learned from XP that the one driver you need to have on the OS disc is one that gets you on the internet as with that you can get everything else!

Oh and rigging Windows to refuse to come out to play when another child us on the block! Doing that towards software that is free is extremely bad taste even for the leaping lizard!!

Unfortunate things for me have been skirt than they should be as I spend took much time trying to show governments, organisations and companies the error of their ways asking with their more naive our just completely unaware public if how they are really being treated.

In so doing I move from place to place and down alliance after alliance only to discover even more shady behaviour and my plans seem to extend further away still. Like a scene in a horror movie our some dream like state when your running ever faster toward the end if the tunnel or corridor and yet it gets further and further away.

All this time the people you have tried to affiliate with ire explain things to are making money for doing nothing while I'm told I'm a bustard sponger because I won't broke my already hurt back because my government only see back breaking work as proper work while they earn money while on a golf course.

I digress.

Still I think that I am very close now to either doing that or divulging something very serious. I have had to do some...other things elsewhere and attempt even...MORE affiliations in the hope of finding someone who does not use or abuse either people or their lofty position of power.

As fir those in lofty positions...it's a long way down! The higher the lofty position the further and faster you fall to the ground.

Funny as I thought this was common knowledge and it seems that these people have also forgotten that their are still icons and people that represent good on this world who will NOT be impressed once they realise the true contempt that us secretly held for innocent people and lives and the level and widespread scale of abuse and the number of lives have been abused as will as ruined and not forgetting completely ended over their amoral behaviour.

Just a shame that a great deal of this involves the Internet and this even includes BUT using the Internet too. The Internet is USED when it suits organisations and then NOT USED when it suits them and there are no excuses.

This is exactly why I stated on my corruption blog how it would be quite funny that I have twelve blogs as they will on occasion back each other up by certain things cross crossing across them.

This is obvious when you think about it but not do obvious that someone could be in a unique position to see these different industries affected, infected, utterly destroyed our remoulded to serve then as if it is theirs by some sort of unspoken right.

What bass been going on is that the candles have all been ignited st either end and what worried me is that I saw this a long time so and I knew that before long the wider public would see it too. Of course any lecturing each western country had done towards others would feel a set if teeth from a foreign country sank deep into their arses if they ever found out too?!

Maybe this is what is already going on? After all everyone and his wife seems to get hacked these days and it us becoming much more regular. I know others are aware of the things I have been even if they have not done the work I have. They might have done things in different ways to new but I decided there was enough already doing that and my more in the face approach, audio recording and trapping by luring them to let it out the bag would be a refreshing change to the norm. Also I thought it was one they would not expect and if I kept cool I could keep it going for a fair old while.

Longer than I thought in all honesty and discovered fast more and nite shocking things then I actually ever thought. Also with big names I would never have thought too.

It is a shame that things are this way and I hope that one day it is discovered not only HOW but WHY it ended up like this?!

I was told by someone years so that the owner of Barns & Noble was a Satanist and I know not whether this was true or not. But ever since that Jehovah's Witness stated that "it is like Satanists are running this country" those words about Barns & Noble said to me about 16 years ago now keep ringing in my ears.

It was such a strange thing to hear and shocking that the words always stayed buried in my brain somewhere. I mean I an not religious but I think that people that are Satanists are not only very sad but if willing to treat people like they have then are very depraved and very cold people and I feel sorry for any family or children they might have.

Hopefully in time things will change and obviously so and a corner is turned in such a way that it is obvious to all watching and that means all of us.
We certainly need to see that things will change to relive the gradual build up of stress I have been seeing on every day people. After all I know where this leads and its but a nice place to be. If toy manage to survive it as I did then I doubt that the vast majority of people will be able to hold themselves back and in check as I have been able to do.

In fact that is what amazes people the most with me when they realise the truth us how I did it. Not just survive but how I have not killed anyone, ended up killing myself or in a mental institution and various other things.

Sure enough if there was ever a digging up if my history...my God I would pity the fool who was tasked with checking all the days in here and anything else there may be as it would certainly not be for the faint of heart.

Yesterday my landlord say in my living room and he items his own building firm and items a number of properties in his family. I showed him my laptop and what I had done with it, the figures I had collected and then the camera 15 feet from my door and that they are everywhere but not on the Great Cambridge Road where all the stores are that were looted in the last riots. I said well they are not protecting the shops and businesses and from the placements in Enfield look to be protecting to Civic Centre which is the main Enfield Council HQ and in fact the pictures and movie I put on YouTube they were 300 yards from it and heading towards it as we watched.

Hmm well I think I roll get to build my computers but sometimes I think everything will just turn to shit before I do?!

I hope not but then these people do seem to be deliberately provoking the public further and further that I worry about what will happen once we have had a few Weeks if build weather and when the grip of the changes bite, you know the ones they keep telling everyone are both FAIR and that the poor will be better off?!

Well if council buildings end up getting trashed by objects our burnt to the ground then toy will be bloody wrong would you not?! Of course you skyway have a just of excuses as will as a list of people to blame for it all no doubt...

..only your are already in a tiny minority and this is getting ever smaller.

UBUNTU, STEAM & AMD DRIVER ISSUES

Well I suppose not really Ubuntu's fault nor Canonical's but is AMD's fault this one.

It seems after spending an absolute age installing Steam...AGAIN and then an even longer age, or I should say several days thank to the NARROWBAND connection I then went to run...

COUNTER STRIKE SOURCE

Only it failed and told me my OpenGL driver was the wrong one or out of date or whatever.

So I fiddled about and was looking in the Catalyst Control Centre and looking for options and I noticed it was not on ...

MAXIMUM GRAPHICS PERFORMANCE and was instead on...

BATTERY SAVING PERFORMANCE

So I thought ooh it is using the HD4200 Graphics chip instead of the HD5470 Graphics chip?!

So I switched it over and it said it needed a rebooot...

REBOOT!

In the desktop I immediately notice my launcher icons are bigger and no longer transparent and I am like uh-oh 3D graphics is gone...AGAIN!!!

I then go into Catalyst Control Centre and it tells me it cannot run there IS a problem as there is no AMD/ATI Driver?!

I then discover that the laptop ONLY HAD the HD4200 driver installed anyway which was bloody weird because the Catalyst Control Centre gave me the option of high or low power?! On the HD4200???

No wait?! So is there to power options on the HD5470M then so you end u having to deal with FOUR SEPARATE POWER OPTIONS??

Surely not...so they let Chimpanzees create the Linux Drivers over at AMD then? Jesus bloody Christ AMD what are you playing at over there?!

SOOOO.... my DRIVER UPDATE program has now been listing no less than FOUR ATI DRIVERS for my system and they are...

UBUNTU & AMD RADEON WORKING IN HARMONY

Well what do you know?! At LONG LAST!!

I have the AMD Radeon Graphics Driver INSTALLED and IN USE for the first time ever in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?!

It seems that I decided to do one last thing because everything got into a bit of a mess partition wise and I decided to wipe the whole laptop put it back to just ONE partition and install Ubuntu onto it alone!

Against my better judgement but knowing I can get it up and running very quickly and easily I attempted to install the AMD Radeon Drivers and, HEY PRESTO, it worked!!

There was something I noted that was different with this install and that is that without me downloading anything at all there were about 5 different choices for AMD Graphics drivers where there were only TWO beforehand and do not know what that was all about. This laptop does have two graphics chips in it so that might be something to do with it.

Oh how weird?!

I just noticed that the fan is not on and the laptop is stone cold?! Well you know what I am going to say next?! I simply have to!!

How COOL is that?!

LMAO! Groan!

Seriously though that IS weird. I am not sure I have ever had it this quiet and this cool before and am rather surprised the screen is lit up and I am typing?!

Anyway so there seems to be a serious issue with the graphics drivers for Ubuntu if you dual boot with Windows 7 using the same hard drive, despite partitioning and certainly on a

HP Pavilion DV7 Laptop
AMD Phenom X3 1.8GHz
Radeon HD5470M & HD4200 Graphics
8GB RAM
Toshiba 320GB Hard Drive (having second added soon)
17 Inch monitor 1600x900

Ohh I can download STEAM now?! LOL!

Hmm I just remembered I was IN THE STORE where I bought this laptop, PC World's store, and a guy was looking at a HP Pavilion lappie and as I passed I said "Don't!" and the guy looked at me as if I was mad and I walked back up to him and said "no I mean it...DON'T!" and has asked why I said that.

I told him that before my one which I bought out the same store had been back in for TWO repairs, several letters had rubbed of, 'a' 's' 'n' 'l', the hard drive failed, the case came apart and they were supposed to fix it and it is STILL coming apart?!

His eyes went wide and he said "are you SERIOUS?!" and I replied, yes.

Right next to the Pavilion was a HP Envy, albeit a little one I had never seen. I said that the Envy would be OK as the keys are not printed and it is their top of the line range.

Oddly enough I never had any problems with my old Pavilion DV5000 and I had that for 7 years and sold it to a friend who is STILL using it?! Yes OK I did have to change the keyboard for a new one but that was because of missing keys that came off due to its age!!

Now I would NEVER buy anything with the PAVILION name on it and I now realise why they were going to gove up PC manufacturing as they were making stuff like crap! I love it when companies do this and then throw their toys out the pram because people will not put up with it?!

well if I was anyone else I would be kicking up more of a stink but luckily for HP I know where all the keys on a keyboard are. I DO look down but I do not know why as I know where they are and have now deliberately stared at the screen for the last 30 seconds!! Hoho....OOOPS!

God I am not going to have to buy ANOTHER bloody Sony product am I before long? Well if the blogging and other online activities pay off I would like to be able to work online while out and about and even on holiday or abroad?!

This being a 17 inch laptop it is too much really. I will get a 15 inch in future provided I have two desktop machines first of course. If I am out and about and need a bigger monitor there is always the HDMI port I can use on a TV wherever it is I am staying.

Then there is the question of what to do with this one...I would probably donate it or give it to someone.

Annoyingly I will probably be wasting my money then soon when I buy another dive to place inside this machine so I can get Windows 7 back on?!

The obvious thig to do now would be to build a gaming PC but not feasable for awhile and not sure how long before it is feasable. But with Ubuntu on here and working it would be the sensible course until I build a Small Form Form Factor Ubuntu Rig. Building another Ubuntu RIG now would just be a waste of time and money. The gaming RIG is too expensive! So the only sensible option is to get Windows back on here, lol.

UBUNTU AND WINDOWS FINAL ROUND

Right the time is almost upon us...or just me, lol.

I have had some really bad days being two things...

Very ill and in a great deal of pain and even spent an entire day in a useless hospital that has nothing but the stench of death for me, having many friends and family die there it is becoming stupid.

Anyway I am recovering slowly and hopefully tomorrow I will be indoors all, or at least most, of the day.

I am going to try a couple of things to see if I can get the current installation of Windows 7 up and booting again?!

I have two methods to be able to do this by way of a Recovery Disk I have acquired and a Windows 7 Full DVD of Home Premium, I will TEACH them for not providing a hard copy?! LMAO!

Anyway failing these two methods I will at least get in and send all my Windows files off to an external 2 Terabyte Hard Drive and then will do the same with the Ubuntu files.

Then and very early next week I have something arriving and it is a caddy that turns my Optical Drive bay into a HDD/SSD Drive bay.

Now I have two options with that in the I DO have a 160GB Western Digital Scorpio Drive here which I could USE to install Ubuntu to or I could get something else.

An SSD would be a bit if a stretch at this point in time and I would want to load Windows 7 onto an SSD anyway as it would need it more than Ubuntu! LOL. Poor Windows!

SO that is what is coming up shortly, the last post or two where I get everything back and NOT to the way it was before but BETTER!

I will obviously do the odd video, albeit shorter and minus the cussing this time, lol.

Ooh yeah and that Ubuntu book should arrive too?!

Hmm but now remembered I am hearing about 13.04 now so i might look that up on the Internet so what people are saying about it?! I am thinking that the 13.04 will be like the 12.04 and be a Long Term Support OS and the 13.10 will be like the 12.10?!

Still got a great deal to get my head round with this and the two Linux Magazines could use a little work too?! Blimey guys you are supposed to make the OS appeal to a wider audience and I wanted to yawn in places! Got annoyed with myself when I was tempted to flick on past whole sections so have to keep picking them up and going through it.

Not even my Linux Pocket Guide book by O'Reilly has been that bad?! Lol.

Now I am sure there is something else I have ordered and do not know if it is related to this blog or another....ooh I know it is another harness but for my bird watching binoculars!! LOL!

Now that I have rattled off because I now and do not know when I can...

1) Play SKYRIM

2) Play FALLOUT NEW VEGAS

3) Play CRYSIS UE

4)Play NEED FOR SPEED or any other og f my games

5) Regain access to my Windows files, photos documents scans and the like (My Screen Test Second Series is on hold now)

I have come to terms with that (he states while knee deep in fingernails and toe nails!!)

But I really would warn anyone away from attempting what I did without a great deal of knowledge of the current methods of boot files, managers and EFI's currently employed by both Linux distributions and Microsoft Windows!!

REALLY DON'T! I suspect it may well be a great deal easier if you have two separate drives and dual boot but with the two OS's occupying their own drives but unless you have I would REALLY avoid this and totaly ignore ANY PC MAGAZINE that states differently as they have obviously no knowledge or experience at all on DUAL BOOTING LINUX and WINDOWS?!

I can tell you this much... I WILL!! I will reacquire everything and still have the current Ubuntu installation still here.

There are many ways of doing it some purely through technical know how and I just have to work it out...

The other by having hardware know how I DO possess but NOT the hardware...BUT I WILL!

Now THAT is just my nature I will not allow myself to be beaten, ooh OK I will not allow myself to be beaten down for long. But I WILL win the war in the end, lol.

The reason for this short post is to not only explain that, for more reasons than you could possibly imagine, but also to explain that I am working my way through this book and I get a great deal of things with both Linux and Unix, and anything else based on Unix like Mac-OS and Android for instance, that I did not understand before. Or fifteen years ago when I dived in head first as soon as a lecturer friend called Alastare Measures presented me with a pale blue Red Hat CD?!

Oddly enough it was Alastare that taught me something else about computing that I had to recently employ yet again after many years because of.... oh damn LINUX!!! LMAO!!! FUNNNNYYYYYY!!!!

Anyway! Yes I am now getting it! I am also understanding how it works differently to Windows and DOS and in all honesty whereas years ago it made LESS SENSE than DOS it is now making alot more sense than Windows directories and the way that works.

I do have an android phone and it is rooted and has superuser permissions so I have had these brief interludes of linux involvements. However looking at the file structure on the phone never made sense to me but now it does.

My head has spent far too long in the Microsoft was of doing things in trying to make a computer appear more...HUMAN! Albeit it doing very badly in the process and just slowing the OS down over consecutive releases, or even fall over.

So now I am having fun now...until the next time I come home soaked and in pain and just want to play Skyrim for a few hours to relax and cannot, lmao!

But I will get there eventually. If I have not sorted the issue in 2 weeks I would most certainly have after 4 weeks.

This will serve to show my determination to see things through and find my way around obstacles in my path that prevent me from doing what I WANT to do and NEED to do!!

It will act as ... an self made marketing post to show a side of my nature.

It will show that despite the fact and can appear to be beaten down and on the verge of defeat I will rise up again when least expected and triumph over the instruments of my demise.

Yes I am smiling today and am looking forward to this! Once this book is done and at the end of the week another and more technical one arrives I should be in a great position within a week or two of beginning to read it?!

Hmm I had better get another pack of bookmarks this week!!

LINUX POCKET GUIDE O'REILLY by DANIEL BARRETT

Well my book has turned up and a great deal earlier than expected to be honest, lol.

It also looks new.

Now it is only a beginners book that is for sure but it was a long time ago I had my little brush with Red Hat and and I remember....NOTHING! Have a hard enough time, well I did last night, remember DOS commands, lol!

So I will go through this and tomorrow order another book and in the meantime time and little by little I was focus in on this Windows booting problem to see if I can fix it.

Now it is entirely possible that something may...present itself to me and a variety of things...

I could end up starting to build a new RIG, ohh I wish!

I could end up getting a SECOND HDD.

Now the latter would be easy to do as my laptop has a SECOND HDD bay next to the first, only you need a special plug and lead to be able to PLUG a secind hard drive in and...

HP want £90 for two 50 Pence plugs and a bit of wire?!

Now even THESE are overpriced and yet STILL COMBINED cost less than Hewlett Packard's wire?!?! I kid you not?!

I visited Maplin when I first wanted to do this and someone that actually worked in the store had the same issue and my jaw dropped when he said "Have you got a HO laptop by any chance?"

You know I felt sorry for HP when they got into that trouble but in all honesty...

After the SHIT I have owned for the last year I would NEVER touch another product of theirs again!!

Two laptops and a printer I have owned of theirs and was hoping to buy a desktop but no bloody chance in hell. I could go into more details about the crap they install on your laptop and how utterly useless it all is but will just droan on o for hours, lol.

In fact I am not sure I would EVER buy a laptop again in all honesty, not after this. Not a Windows laptop that is for sure!

I will also not buy Windows 8 either...NEVER!!!

So Microsoft had better get their heads out their arses over the next two years as they are climbing up it and will disappear up the own jacksies by then!

This utter manipulation of users just to try to get more cash and stop others from getting cash has got to stop.

Also I have seen no end of anti trust cases going on but have now been exposed to some that are far worse and far more obvious to those already pursued and yet I hear NOTHING of any action?!

Also I am not the only one that sees this and a great many see it too and one example is the disappearance of the boot.ini file and I cannot find a way to tell the Windows boot that Windows is now on the X: drive. Well until I do Windows stays off my laptop I am afraid to say so you kinda shot yourself in the foot their Microsoft?!

I also find it kinda odd how two completely different Operating Systems that seem OK for the most part have had utterly disastrous OS releases either side of them?!

This is not me you understand but what others say as I have not used anything other than Windows 7, since Win XP, and Ubuntu 12.04, since Red Hat err circa 1998.

So with Windows 7 you have Vista prior and 8 post its release. I have heard nothing good about either one and Valve seem to feel the same.

With Ubuntu 12.04 you have...err whatever version they were ooh wait they had tens in them?! 11.10 and 12.10?!

With the latter there were two things that concerned me and that was the BIG ICONS and looking like it was going for a touch screen design, stupid on PCs as Microsoft is finding out. The other was the integration of Amazon ads into the OS?! Oooh boy was that stupid!!!

If you have not worked out the obvious this I call going after the gravy and everything else gets left behind or discarded, or us...

...so it is MONEY and not USERS that matters. But as they always say it is about users they LIE.

Hmm sounds a lot like governments and I guess the proverbial BREEDS?!

Like I said before it became obvious that you have to lie your way to the top, everyone knows that, but what amazes me is that when you get there and get caught out LYING the public go oooh your at the top?! You cannot lie?!!! BURN HIM, GET RID OF HIM?!

Ooh OK yes maybe with the Ubuntu going for the money ...YES, OK I was surprised. But as regards to the contempt shown to people and the love of the POUND NOTE or DOLLAR no surprise at all. Funny enough they have had this attitude for decades now but...aren't well all now skint?!?!?!

UBUNTU: CANONICAL SEND ME EMAIL ABOUT PAYING?!

WELL THAT IS NOT GOOD?!

As you are probably aware, LMFAO, I have issues installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS when Linux Operating Systems are supposed to be, and SHOULD BLOODY BE, all the rage these days.

Of these the one that has the highest, but now appears to be dropping like a lead balloon, regards was Ubuntu and it's use of the Unity Desktop Environment.

Now as far as I am aware my problem is one of the following...

1) Bad Support by AMD (really stupid, not to mention NAIVE, and surprising of you if I am honest)

2) A Problem with WUBI (not sure I want to mess around making partitions only to have it FAIL again)

3) Ubuntu is buggered and badly implemented (no prizes for where their focus has been!)

Thus far, hmm why do I keep thinking there was a third recipient - ohh yeah Computer Active Magazine lol, I have had TWO responses...

TWO from Canonical and..

ONE from AMD

Both of which are the extremely bad mannered and fecking annoying NO REPLY emails which I think should be banned and companies FINED in a big way for doing this and then a BLACK LIST created for on-line companies who do immoral things and another for breaking the law.

Anyway guess what is happening right now? Well it that shall not be named is being installed for the FOURTH TIME, lol. Don't.... JUST DON'T!!! LMAO!

Right that was very odd. Turned out it needed a reboot to register that the partition, yep wrong Wubi bit, was gone and I realised when it showed I had 280 GB of space.

Only on reboot the dual boot partition is still there, but no big deal as you could, if you have this problem too, go into the BIOS and set time to '0' seconds. Or there is the fixboot option too.

There are a great many descriptions and answers given by people in the forums that seem to go 'right around the houses' to fix this problem and will be baffling and unnecessary to many.

I need my head examined as I have now decided to REINSTALL UBUNTU and have this really stupid idea that I did things in the WRONG order when I was first logged on the first time and...

...well my damned curiosity to get to the truth, it is another bloody puzzle Martin, and see if I am right has led me to go through it all AGAIN?!

Only THIS TIME I am going to do things VERY differently to what I did last time and think I made a mistake in treating it like a Windows install and should have been more...AWARE.

Did not help that I was unfamiliar with many Linux OS's either and I have had a play about and know what everything does and where it all is, well enough anyway, and now want to put my theory to the test.

So in case it goes wrong you might want to ignore the screaming and shouting in the next couple of posts as it is my own fault for having to do things right and refusing to be beaten by anyone or indeed ANYTHING!

Hopefully I will get it right and then I can put on here the correct sequence to a nice Ubuntu 12.04 LTS install on iffy hardware, eh Hewlett Packard?!?!

UBUNTU FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Well it was a pain in the backside but not as much as before...

...but in all fairness this was more down to this HP Pavilion DV7 Laptop and I could not figure out how to get into BIOS SETTINGS and HP have this cut down OS type thing going on I have never used.

Only I lost patience trying to figure out which button it was and it was not the obvious three choices. So could not boot from Optical Drive and therefore could not create a USB key so I cleared clutter and transfered a shed-load, around 80 GBs, of data of to my 2TB WD Elements External Drive and installed it.

Only now I have it on it seems quite pleasing but it boots straight into Ubuntu now and also... well its actually slower than Windows 7 and I was certainy not expecting that?!

It is now late and I have no idea why it is slow as it certainly should be a damn site quicker than Windows 7 so I will have to fathom that out, probably be tomorrow as I am knackered but will tinker for awhile.

It is very uncluttered and I cannot seem to access the files stored in Windows on my C: drive either but that is no big deal right now and more important that I get that Boot Option to appear on start up!

I do find it amusing that the magazine and everyone said how easy and simple it was and yet I had failed to get the Disc to boot, failed to make a USB key and now not sure if I can get Windows back.

Added to that is the fact as I was typing that last paragraph I got the "Error while trying to publish your post" message which was the main reason I decided to try this. Though in all honesty I did not think it would cure that and why I did not try Ubuntu much earlier but my curiosity in Linux and Ubuntu in particular made me think that if I installed it and it did cure that problem it would be a great bonus!

Still I did also get a loss of connection every now and then and let us see if that still occurs?

Now I will try and go back to finding an Excel Spreadsheet somewhere else on my system and see how that software looks as I have never used this Libre Office and only ever used MS Office and Open Office. Hmm Open Office should install on Ubuntu?

Ahh yes I will check out that software center first!!


EDIT:

Figured the KEY for BIOS SETTINGS. It is F10, though I get into it via the "esc" key.

Turned of the HP Quick Launch or whatever it was called.

I then changed the boot delay from 0 to 5 and WAHEY!!!

Only Ubuntu then froze on its second start up and I had to hold the power button down for 7 seconds to force a shut down?! Ohh I think this Wappy thingy may not be quite "there yet"?!

Still seems slow and a little unresponsive and i will be totally honest here and cannot believe I am about to type this but it is making Windows 7 look like greased lightning right now.

This cannot be right and I am thinking it is this fancy method for installing it using the Wabi (was it?) Force method. So I am assuming this is still a relatively new method and has some ... KINKS, lol.

Still I have the Windows Option back up which is a relief as i am quite busy with all these blogs right now and having to mess around with another reinstall just a few months after the last would be quite annoying.

I might look into this unresponsive Ubuntu on the Internet tomorrow at some point.

A DANCE OF CHANCE WITH LINUX & UBUNTU

Well it has been a long time since I last used Linux and dual booted it alongside Windows errr Windows NT 4.0 if I recall. Or possibly Windows 200, or 98...ohh I cannot recall which one.

Come to think of it I cannot recall which Linux version or more specifically which Red Hat version it was?! Does Red Hat still exist?!

Anyway after someone, HI PETER LOL, put this thought in my head and it wwas being talked about an that Computer Active special edition...thingy of software I thought I would mosey on over to the Ubuntu website and have a look see?!

Well it seems interesting enough for me to want to investigate further and it does not seem anything like the pain in the posterior that Red Hat was?! INdeed several lecturers at Middlesex University at the time were amazed that I not only attempted to dual boot Windows and Linux but that I succeeded and did not ask any of them to help solve issues getting it set up!

"EASY PEASEY!!" I said all cocky to them while the all raised eyebrows in turn before I then said "nahh your joking it took me a full 48 hours to work out how to do it?!" to which they laughed. Still they were surprised I did it all the same which surprised me that they were surprised. I got that a great deal in my four years of studying!

Anyway I have not considered Linux since those days long past but cannot deny I have not wondered how things have changed. I have long admired the Linux OS and Linus Torvalds as well as Unix and Solaris. Apple cottoned on to this very early on and really recreated Unix in their own image. Groan!

Anyway I was pretty impressed with things I have read about and I should have picked up some time ago when I started seeing Magazines for Linux Users alongside the usual PC Format and MAC Format fair and wares?!

Should have trusted my instincts there and taken the plunge and bought a copy!!

Anyway UBUNTU 10.04 the Long Term Support version is currently downloading, not too slow for once but has been at it 30 minutes or so. Once done I will burn the ISO Image and then make a USB KEY with it and give it a look see.

I am actually looking forward to this!!

Hell if I am THAT impressed I may EVEN INSTALL IT, using WUBI?!?!

But before I decide to do that I will check out and research much about it and see what the lay of the land is. The trouble with Operating Systems, or more specifically SWITCHING THEM, is that as many find out there is always something you want or need to do that you have to used Windows for and I have always found that infuriating!! Hence why I and others always ended up dual booting, well I just did it in the beginning purely because it could be done in theory and I wanted to test that!! LMAO!

Well it has just tipped over 600MB of the 695MB download and it has just occurred to me that this does not seem very big, lol.

Once I have full tested and researched it I will let you know on here what I think but you must remember that on a computer there is nothing that I do not end up either doing or need to do. Some things become more mainstream while others are minimal but this can switch around....
